MLive says, “Not far from Michigan's border with Wisconsin, you'll find the Paint River, home to the Horserace Rapids. A lively stretch of alluring rapids, you should only observe this rushing water unless you are very skilled with navigating wild rapids. The Horserace Rapids Nature Trail is perfect for taking a stroll and watching for birds. It's recommended to visit this area during the summer months.”

Horserace Rapids was one of the most tranquil and beautiful spots I had the pleasure to experience on this trip throughout the U.P. There wasn’t another soul in sight the entire time I was exploring, and it was quiet and tucked away from busy tourist spots.
The trails are narrow and unkept, nestled between massive rock faces and formations. My experience there was less like hiking and more like light bouldering, to be honest.
I spotted so many unique insects in this area, and kept my eyes peeled for the small mammals I kept hearing scuttling around in the understory. The air smelled perfectly pine-y, and I could hear rushing water the entire time I hiked. There were a lot of very cool formations and “caves” made by the rocks that I spent time exploring, making sure to be cautious in case there were animal friends using them as homes. I could have spent all day exploring this gorgeous spot, but I was eager to make my way back home for a good shower, a hot meal, and to see my bunnies after being gone for a whole week. I’ll definitely be stopping back up at Horserace Rapids in the future.
