MLive says: “Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge covers nearly 10,000 acres on the Shiawassee River, smack dab in the center of Saginaw County. Within the marsh, forest and grasslands you'll find plenty of wildlife, as the name suggests. Birdwatchers are particularly attracted to the refuge, since it was formed specifically as a sanctuary for our feathered friends. The prothonotary warbler makes a home here during warm weather months and it is one of the only places in Michigan where you'll find the species. You can walk the trails or take the driving path to catch a glimpse.”

I was pretty excited to check this spot out, especically after arriving at the headquarters and seeing the awesome signage detailing the wildlife and biodiversity of the site. However, Michigan’s/the Great Lakes’ historic high water this year had other plans…
There have been quite a few county locations that have been inaccessible due to weather conditions, flooding, COVID, and transportation issues. It’s always aggravating when it happens, but these are also humble reminders of the fact that some things are simply out of my control when I’m traveling, and it’s best not to push my luck and just come back another time.
See ya soon, Shiawassee Wildlife Refuge (hopefully)!
