MLive says: “A place truly unlike anywhere else, Isle Royale National Park is worth the work it takes to get there. If you have ever been lucky enough to visit this island in Lake Superior, you are likely in a perpetual state of missing its beauty. If you have not visited, and you have the ability to do so, start planning immediately for a trip. You can only get to this national park via ship or plane but all the traveling is worth it. Stay perfect, Isle Royale.”

So, we didn’t go to Isle Royale. That is a destination that deserves its own multi-day excursion. However, we did absolutely spend some time up in the Keweenaw Peninsula on our trip, on a lovely lake called Lac La Belle.

Lac La Belle is a peaceful spot in the northern part of the peninsula, known for spotting eagles, wolves, and bears. We made the drive up there on a very sunny and mostly warm afternoon to kayak. It took us a few tries to find somewhere to assemble and launch Bill’s folding expedition kayak, but once we did, we were in heaven.

We paddled into Lake Superior, around Lac La Belle, and found some quiet spots to just sit in the kayak and watch eagles. It was wonderful and rejuvenating. Bill was so fond of it: he said it was by far his favorite stop of our trip, and speculated about owning a cabin in the area so he could paddle the lake every day. I too, felt it was a magical place.

I don’t have a lot to say about it; some places you just need to go yourself. Paddling in silence across a lake, watching eagles fly between tree tops, and watching delicate sunlight bounce around in marsh grasses is not something I quite know how to put into words.
